Introduction to the Course
This course specialises in the fascinating tradition of precious metals and gemstones, covering everything from concept design and presentation drawing through to production techniques and manufacture. Sponsorship from local bullion dealer Cookson Precious Metals Ltd enables the creation of a unique learning environment imitating the conditions of a practical workshop, meaning you can acquire a wide range of strong practical skills.
Your Learning Experience
During your first year you’ll be introduced to basic hand and quantity production techniques, after which you’ll be able to manufacture pieces of jewellery and small objects made to your own design in gold and silver. These practical projects are supported by a programme of core studies covering drawing and design, the efficient use of materials and an introduction to gemmology, metallurgy and the making and maintenance of tools.
In year two you’re encouraged to develop and combine processes to create more complex pieces of work using advanced fine jewellery techniques whilst encouraging individuality in ideas and design.
Your learning will be guided by some of the best in the industry. Our highly skilled and experienced team of lecturers are experts include the fields of diamond mounting, fine jewellery, silversmithing, and engraving with industry experience and awareness.
Career Prospects
Crafts person employed in the jewellery and allied industries, on progression to HND or BA (Hons) courses within the faculty.
Entry Requirements
A good portfolio, plus four GCSEs at grade C minimum, including English Language
