animation for games Design
This brand new course looks at the increasingly popular area of animation. Designed in collaboration with industry professionals, the fundamental principles of animation are covered, including, movement, action, character design and scriptwriting. You’ll also have the opportunity to pursue your own aspirations relating to ‘modes of expression’ and storytelling.
At the end of the third semester you’ll be able to choose one of two pathways:

Animation for Games Design
The course has a distinct emphasis at each level, and when combined, these provide a comprehensive range of skills, knowledge and understanding which will enable you to secure professional positions as commercial animators and/or practitioners in closely related professions. The emphasis in broad terms are:
Level 4
Animation Principles and Skill
Level 5
Visual Communication and Skills
Level 6
Professional Practice (Employability) including vocational awareness.
Your learning experience
Professional studio practice forms the basis of the course and practical workshop-based learning is an important aspect, providing a ‘hands on’ approach to understanding animation. You will be encouraged to think creatively and take an innovative approach to problem solving throughout the course.
The Faculty’s state-of-the-art resources include motion control and motion capture equipment, which will add significantly to your skill base.
You’ll benefit from the Faculty’s state of the art industry resources, including our new animation suite which is the first of its kind in any European University. It includes a MILO motion control unit and Motion Capture facilities.
Throughout the course the opportunity to study abroad, regular field trips and specialist guest lecturers will enhance, and add variety to your learning.
The course is delivered by our experienced staff who include traditional animators, computer animation specialists and visual communicators. You will also benefit form specialist technical support staff.
Career prospects
On graduation from the programme you will be equipped with the skills required to become an animator in a range of contexts, including the Games Design industry. Alternatively your qualification will enable you to gain entry to postgraduate courses. Graduates may also gain career fulfilment in a range of related specialisms, including areas such as: art direction, CG and stop-motion modelling, editing, post-production, storyboarding, audio design, concept art, motion graphics, scriptwriting etc.
Student Work: Animation
The following films were all produced by recent BA or MA students studying animation within the School of Visual Communications. The student work below encompasses a mix of stop-motion, CGI and drawn animation, and also includes the winner of the 2009 Royal Television Society award for the UK's best Postgraduate Animation, the dark short film ‘My Brown Friend' by Steven Spencer.
