BA (Hons) interior products Design

Introduction to the course

Interior Products Design is concerned with designing objects which influence our interior spaces. The research, design and development of areas such as lighting, architectural fittings, furniture, ceramic-ware, architectural glass and modular internal systems are studied during the course. You will be encouraged to learn and solve problems through experimentation and practical application. The course is part of the Design Studies Programme and shares modules with Product
Design, Interior Design and Design Management Strategies. Links with these subject areas enable you to explore a variety of design areas in a holistic context while also widening your career prospects.

Your learning experience

Learning is primarily project-based and supported by lectures, seminars and specialist workshops. These will ensure that you learn to appreciate and understand all aspects of the design process and are aware of the commercial, cultural and technological context within which business operates. This aspect of
your learning is supported by direct engagement with business which often enables you to undertake ‘live’ projects.

You will have access to a variety of facilities to support your studies, including computer aided design and equipped prototype development workshops which include rapid prototyping and digitally driven processes. The projects you
undertake will help you to develop not only an understanding of your specialist subject but also transferable, intellectual and personal skills appropriate to the changing environment of professional practice.

Throughout the programme there is the opportunity to study overseas and engage with regular study trips, which will provide you with the ability to evaluate and assess the design field in greater depth.

Career prospects

Graduates will have various career paths available to them on completion of the course. Careers within manufacturing or retailing are possible as well as opportunities to work as part of a project team within a design consultancy.
Typical roles would include designer, project manager, account manager or new product development manager. Graduates also have the option of working as a freelance designer, design entrepreneur or as a designer for batch produced or one off products.
